Abstract NOAA’s Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) is a physical space and research framework to foster collaboration evaluate emerging tools, technology, products for NWS operations. The HWT’s Experimental Warning Program (EWP) focuses on research, communication that may improve severe hazardous weather warnings societal response. EWP was established with three fundamental hypotheses: 1) operational meteorologists increases the speed of transition process rate adoption beneficial applications 2) knowledge between operations benefits both communities, 3) including end users in experiments generates outcomes are more reliable useful society. designed mimic any Forecast Office, providing opportunity leverage live archived activity anywhere United States. During first decade EWP, 15 covered topics new radar satellite applications, storm-scale numerical models data assimilation, total lightning use forecasting, multiple social science end-user topics. range from exploratory conceptual controlled experimental design establish statistical patterns causal relationships. brought than 400 forecasters, 60 emergency managers, 30 broadcast HWT participate demonstrations, archive events, data-denial influencing today’s warning environment shaping future years come.
